Being a good listener is one interpersonal skill that sets successful people apart from others. Have you ever been telling someone a story that is important to you only to have the person you are talking to interrupt you with a comment or statement that is not related to your story? Or, has someone ever checked a text message or email on their phone while you are talking to them? Think about how you felt when that happened. You probably didn’t feel like you or your story was important to the other person. If you are like me, you just discontinued your story and changed the subject.

Listening is a part of communication that is often difficult to do. Most people remember only 20% of what is heard. In today’s world of multi-tasking, instant communication, and social media face-to-face communication is becoming a lost art. So mastering this skill is vital to your professional success. Here are some ways to improve your listening skills and build better relationships not only in your professional life, but also in your personal life as well.

  1. Make eye contact with the person that is speaking to you.
  2. Try not to anticipate what you are going to say to that person.
  3. Clear your mind of distractions.
  4. Do not interrupt the person unless you need to clarify a point.
  5. Occasionally nod to let the person know you follow what he/she is saying.
  6. Respond when appropriate. Don’t try to finish the other person’s sentence.
